History/Family/Any Additional Information: There's family, back east. Beth's parents were relatively well to do traders, settled in a city where she chafed at the restrictions of expectation. Her elder brother wasn't doing too well there, either, after his fiancee jilted him, and the two siblings agreed to travel out west together, with a view to teaching. It didn't exactly work out that way. Gus died of cholera a few months after they arrived in Corvallis, and Beth was left alone. A single woman, with no protection, and no income. Forcing sentimentality aside, she sold what she could of Gus' clothes and the books she could bear to part with, paid off their debts, and went to the saloon in search of work. She ended up next door, in the cathouse, discovering she still had one thing left to sell. The first time wasn't pleasant, or the second, but she's adapted, found friends, and she's been there nearly three years. And the saloon owner might have had something to do with her decision to stay rather than head back east with her tail between her legs. | ||||||||||
